PORTicipate. Every Day!

Have you heard about the Niagara Healthy Kids Community Challenge?

Niagara is one of 45 communities across Ontario taking part in the Health Kids Community Challenge.
The City of Port Colborne received $17,456.79 in funding to promote the health of children aged 12 years and under and accomplish the Ontario Government’s Healthy Kids Strategy to reduce childhood obesity rates. The City of Port Colborne is challenging youth to PORTicipate. Every Day!

This intervention, PORTicipate. Every Day! is aimed at creating a supportive environment that will provide the City and our partners with the
capacity to continue to deliver accessible physical activity programs that have proven success in the past.

    Theme 2: Water Does Wonders

Let's encourage our kids to drink water when they are thirsty. It is much better for them than drinks with sugar added.

We all know healthy eating is important for growing children. So is healthy hydration. Our community is looking for ways to make it easier for kids to choose healthy drinks more often.

Water is the natural choice for kids to stay hydrated and healthy. Water makes up more than half of a child’s weight. They need a steady supply to keep their bodies working and growing properly. Water contains no sugar, calories, additives, preservatives, or caffeine. And it’s free.

Make water the easy choice for your kids – and keep them sipping throughout the day.

In 2017, over 60 new water filling stations will be installed in schools, parks and community buildings across the region!

Theme 1: Run. Jump. Play. Every Day.

    “FUN IN THE SUN”
A local partner, Community Living, has a long standing summer day camp program “Fun in the Sun” that will serve as the starting point for
PORTicipate. Every Day. East Village Community Park was previously the home base for the “Fun in the Sun” summer day camp program.
However, for the past two years, due to financial limitations and additional circumstances at the park, it has not been used for the summer
program. Niagara Healthy Kids Community Challenge funding made it possible for the park to be their home base again and increased their reach by eliminating accessibility and transportation barriers. The park, with entrances at both Welland and Fares Street is at a central location to the East Village (3 Bridges) Community. There is the saying ‘If you build it, they will come’ and that sentiment is true for the East Village Community Park, and the youth and
families that this intervention program reached. By bringing active programming to this area, there was a significant positive impact on
    their pursuit of physical health.

The kids were excited to get out and play once the equipment came out at East Village Community Park. The unveiling of Port Colborne’s Healthy Kids Community Challenge contribution to the Fun in the Sun Program included a trailer filled with kids play equipment.
