January 2013 Update

 

December 2012 Update

The City and their Consultants continue to make progress on the development of the following:

Cost/Budgeting
The total project budget remains as originally approved by Council at $32,249,000.
The City is working with Subway Restaurants and Good Sports Excellence to refine the development of their spaces.

Schedule and Status
Project development approximately 98% complete as of the week of December 17, 2012.
Bi-weekly construction meetings continue to take place on Tuesdays at 10:00am on site. Commissioning meetings take place prior to the construction meetings. Commissioning of the equipment is well underway. Next meetings are scheduled for January 2013.

Construction Phase
Interior and exterior signage installation is to commence the week of December 17th.
Construction of the bocce courts is essentially complete. Fencing and final perimeter landscaping is outstanding.
Completion of sod and landscaping in all areas yet to be completed will be done in the spring of 2013.
Installation of interior glazing is essentially complete. Some pieces are missing and the openings have been closed with ply-wood.
Wood frame doors have been installed and painted. Glazing in some door frames has been installed. Installation of door operators is ongoing.
Application of the final paint coat is ongoing in all areas of the building.
The deck tile has been laid. Interior siding work in the pool area will be started the week of December 17.
The majority of the millwork has been installed.
Rubberized Gym floor has been installed. Line painting on the gym floor and the second floor walking track is ongoing.
Linoleum and carpet installations are expected to commence this week.

Implementation of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
Consultants are continuing to track LEED points and are finalizing the scorecard.

November 2012 Update

The City and their Consultants continue to progress on the development of the following:


Cost/Budgeting
The total project budget remains as originally approved by Council as $32,249,000.

Meetings were held with Subway Restaurants and Good Sports Excellence to refine the development of their spaces.

Schedule and Status
Project development approximately 88% complete as of October 31, 2012
Bi-weekly construction meetings continue to take place on Tuesdays at 10:00am on site. Commissioning meetings take place prior to the construction meetings.
The signage tender has been awarded to Spectra Signs. Design revisions have been addressed.
The project is tracking to scheduled completion in late 2012.

Construction Phase
Installation of interior glazing is ongoing on the first floor around the aquatic centre, gym and main rink.
HM doors and aluminum framed/glass doors are being installed around the arena change rooms and aquatic centre.
Painting is ongoing in all areas of the building.
Ceramic tiles installation is ongoing in all washrooms and change rooms. The deck tile around the pool is underway.
T-bar ceiling grids are being installed along the lobby corridors on the ground floor.
Landscape planting is complete.
The final coat of asphalt and parking lines are complete.
Dasher board installation is complete.
Skate flooring installation started. Second floor track rubber has been installed.
Millwork installation of countertops and cabinetry is ongoing.
Concrete floor polishing is underway.

 
 
 

August 2012 Update

The City and their Consultants continue to progress on the development of the following:

Cost/Budgeting
The total project budget remains as originally approved by Council as $32,249,000.
YMCA changes have been incorporated into the design and are being priced. Subway and the YMCA have also been incorporated into the signage package.

Schedule and Status
Project development approximately 85% complete as of August 31, 2012
Bi-weekly construction meetings continue to take place on Tuesdays at 10:00am on site. Commissioning meetings are now scheduled to take place prior to the construction meetings.
The signage tender has been issued and closed September 14th. Submissions are under review by the Contractor and Architect.
The project is tracking to scheduled completion in late 2012.

Construction Phase
Masonry walls appear to be complete.
Painting has progressed in the arena change rooms and corridors.  Primer application has progressed through the arenas and gymnasium is ongoing on the second floor. Painting of the wood in the aquatic centre is underway.
Drywall framing and boarding is ongoing at the second floor.
Ceramic tiles installation is ongoing in the showers and on the second floor washrooms.
Tile installation inside the pool tanks are complete and have been reviewed by IRC.  The deck tile will commence once interior siding work is in place.
Sprinkler lines are installed.
Final grading work continues around the building.  All curbs have been poured and most sidewalks. Concrete sidewalks are expected to be complete this week.
Installation of interior glazing is ongoing on the second floor.
Dasher board installation is underway at rink 2 and is almost complete. Rink 1 is scheduled to start once rink 2 is complete.  Rink 1 HDPE is being installed along the track railing and on walls at the ends of the rink.
Skate flooring is scheduled to start this week.

 
 

July 2012 Update

The City and their Consultants continue to progress on the development of the following:

The total project budget remains as originally approved by Council as $32,249,000.
YMCA changes have been incorporated into the design and are being priced.

Schedule and Status
Project development is more than 75% complete as of July 31, 2012
Bi-weekly construction meetings continue to take place on Tuesdays at 10:00am on site.
A revised signage design package has been reviewed by the City; YCMA and Vale.  A design package is expected to be finalized by the end of July 2012.
The project is tracking to scheduled completion in late 2012.

Construction Phase
The pool tile work is well underway. The lap pool is almost complete. IRC has been engaged for additional pool and pool environment testing for quality assurances.
Installation of the metal cladding and Kalwall for the building veneer is ongoing.  Phenolic panels have been installed along the building faces.
The final concrete toppings and slabs on grade have been poured.
Rink 1 floor has been poured.
Masonry walls are ongoing throughout the facility.  Steel stud framing and drywall installations are ongoing at the second floor and main lobby.
Interior priming of the block walls and painting has progressed through the aquatic change rooms; gymnasium and is ongoing on the second floor.  Rink 2 steel has been painted.
Tile work in the arena showers is ongoing.
Exterior glazing installation is underway and interior frames for glazing is being installed.
Lighting is installed in the gymnasium, the pool and Rink 2 and is approximately 75% complete.

 
 
 

May 2012 Update

Schedule and Status
Project development is more than 70% complete as of May 31, 2012
Bi-weekly construction meetings continue to take place on Tuesdays at 10:00am on site.
A revised signage design package has been presented to the City for review.  The title sponsor for the building and the YMCA have been incorporated into the design.  All feedback has been given to the Architect for implementation.  A design package is expected to be finalized in June 2012.
The project is tracking to scheduled completion in late 2012.

Construction Phase
The pool and pool deck tile work is expected to begin in June.
Installation of the metal cladding and Kalwall for the building veneer is ongoing.  Phenolic panels are ready for delivery.
The final concrete topping for the bleachers and running track has been poured.
Slab on grades have been poured at corridors, multi-purpose room and rink 2 floor.  Rink 1 is expected to be poured in June.
Masonry walls are ongoing throughout the facility.  Steel stud framing and drywall installation is well underway at the second floor and main lobby.
Mechanical, electrical and refrigeration equipment is in place.
Interior priming of the block walls has commenced at the arena change rooms. Tile work in the showers is expected to commence in June.
Design revisions to accommodate the YMCA have been issued as changes for implementation.  Revisions made are to provide child minding services, accommodate fitness programs and maximize use of proposed rooms.
The supply and installation of the building score clocks has been awarded to Harris Time Inc.

 
 

April 2012 Update

Council has approved YMCA of Niagara as the programmer of the fitness and aquatics in the facility; Subway Restaurants as the food service provider and also Good Sports Excellence as the Pro Shop vendor in the new Health and Wellness Centre.  All vendors are approved as providers subject to the agreements being approved by Council.

Project development is more than 60% complete
Bi-weekly construction meetings are taking place on Tuesdays at 10:00am on site.
Aquicon has awarded the Audio Visual tender to Design Electronics and the Security tender to Pinders.
A revised signage design package has been presented to the City for review.  The title sponsor for the building and the YMCA have been incorporated into the design.  A design package is expected to be finalized in Mid May 2012.
The project is tracking to the scheduled completion of late 2012.

Construction Phase
The overall roof system is almost complete.
The pool and pool deck area are ready for tile preparation.
Installation of the metal cladding and Kalwall for the building veneer is underway.  The third delivery is expected in early May 2012.
Radiant heating piping for the bleacher seats and running track is in place.
The final concrete topping for the bleachers has been poured.  Aquicon is working on completing the running track in floor heating and will then pour the top coat.
Masonry walls have been erected throughout the facility in the arena and aquatic change rooms.  This work has progressed into the bocce area and the second floor spaces.
The guardrails around the running track have been installed. Railings for stairs and drink rails are underway.
Mechanical and electrical equipment is in place on the second floor north side.
Rink 1 and 2 aprons have been formed. Rink 2 apron has been poured and the sand layer has been applied.  Warm brine piping is complete in rink 2 as well.
Design revisions to accommodate the YMCA have been reviewed by the Architect and are with Aquicon for pricing.  Revisions are being considered to provide child minding services, accommodate fitness programs and maximize use of proposed rooms.

 
 

March 2012 Update

Bi-weekly construction meetings are taking place on Tuesdays at 10:00am on site.
The City has finalized requirements for I.T.; data and security. Aquicon issued the RFP for A/V services February 2nd.  The tender closed February 23rd.  The City met with prospective vendors following the bid closing and Aquicon will be awarding the A/V contract to Design Electronics of Niagara Falls.
Preliminary signage designs have been presented to the City for review.  The Architect is further developing the design.  The signage RFP is expected to be tendered in April.
The project is tracking to the scheduled completion of late 2012.

Construction Phase
Major steel work is complete.  The overall roof system is approximately 95% complete.
Below grade mechanical work for the pool is in place.  The deck level has been poured.
Installation of the metal cladding and Kalwall for the building veneer is underway.
Precast floor construction and bleacher installation is complete.
Masonry walls have been erected throughout the facility in the arena and aquatic change rooms.  Above grade mechanical work has been installed in the change rooms and junior B space.
All stairway steel frames have been constructed.  The guardrails around the running track are being installed.
Mechanical and electrical equipment is in place on the second floor south side.  The Cimco refrigeration plant is also in place.
Preparation is underway for the installation of the refrigeration piping in arena 2.
Concrete floor topping on the bleacher seating in the Rinks and on the indoor track which incorporates the in-floor heating is being installed.

 
 
 

Vale Announced as Title Sponsor of Health and Wellness Centre

 VALE ANNOUNCES $1.25 MILLION COMMUNITY INVESTMENT IN

PORT COLBORNE'S NEW HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTRE

PORT COLBORNE, December 8, 2011 - Vale today announced a $1.25 million investment in Port Colborne's new Health and Wellness Centre over the next 10 years. In recognition of this donation, the City of Port Colborne will rename the facility, "The Vale Health and Wellness Centre."

The Vale Health & Wellness Centre, located at the T.A. Lannan Sports Complex, will provide a state-of-the-art facility for sport, recreation, wellness, entertainment, and commerce. The 140,000 square foot venue will house two NHL-sized ice pads, an aquatic centre with both lap and leisure pools, a field house containing a double gym and fitness area, eight outdoor bocce courts and a walking/jogging track for all season use. 

"Our company has a proud history of support and involvement with the City of Port Colborne," said Del Fraipont, Manager of Vale's Port Colborne Refinery. "Supporting this new facility provides Vale with an exciting opportunity to further demonstrate our commitment to helping to make the community of Port Colborne a better place to live and work."

The Vale Health and Wellness Centre is a $32 million construction project that is expected to open its doors to the public in November of 2012. This multi-purpose facility is designed to create a community hub where citizens of all ages can meet, enjoy and engage in leisure activities focused on health and wellness.

"Vale has been a long standing partner within our community. This investment strengthens their commitment to the City of Port Colborne," stated Mayor Vance Badawey. "This project introduces a one-of-a-kind facility for the Niagara Region and we are extremely pleased that Vale has chosen to team up with us."
