Lake Erie Watershed Conditions Statement " Flood Outlook

Posted by Michelle Cuthbert on Monday, November 5th, 2018

Environment Canada has issued a Wind Warning for Haldimand and Niagara ahead of a low pressure system that is set to bring strong winds to Lake Erie and the Niagara Peninsula. Sustained Southwest winds of 50km/hr gusting to 90km/hr will begin Tuesday morning and continue into Wednesday. The direction and speed of the wind will increase water levels in the Eastern Lake Erie Basin.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) are forecasting Lake Erie water levels at Port Colborne to increase due to surge by 2.0m over current water levels with significant wave heights exceeding 1.5m. Peak water levels are forecasted to occur late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning and will start to recede Wednesday afternoon. During this time, there is an increased risk of shoreline erosion and flooding resulting from strong wave action and surge. Residents living along Lake Erie are urged to monitor the situation closely.

Please note that Lake Erie static (calm and flat) water levels are well above the long-term historical average and are forecasted to remain elevated through spring 2019. The potential for shoreline flooding and erosion is greater at this time due to the higher than normal Lake Erie water levels. Any moderate increase in West or Southwest winds will further increase this risk.

The NPCA will continue to monitor these conditions and will issue further messages as required. Information on the Flood Status in the watershed and water levels within the Great Lakes and streams can be found on the NPCA’s website at:

This notice is in effect until Thursday November 8th, 2018 and will be updated as required.
