For Heritage Week 2020 the Port Colborne Historical & Marine Museum and L.R. Wilson Heritage Research Archives will be featuring artifacts from the Fred Addis sports collection on their Facebook pages, in honour of the City of Port Colborne just completing SportsFest!
Special thanks to Spencer Alder for his work digitizing the collection. Spencer Alder, a summer employee, selected these artifacts, as some of the most interesting in the collection. They will be featuring one each day this week.
Here's a look at today's artifact:
Sports Medal, W. Zuck, Port Colborne Lions – 2019.1.380
Among the oldest artifacts in the Addis collection, this medal from 1931 commemorated one of the local players who partook in the sport of hockey, demonstrating the sport’s roots in Port Colborne.
In 2019, Mr. Fred Addis donated a large collection of memorabilia, archives, and artifacts to do with Port Colborne's rich hockey heritage. The Addis Collection traces the history of hockey players who grew up in Humberstone to become some of the most prestigious hockey players of their time. Tracing the career paths of players such as Bronco Horvath, Theodore “Ted” Kennedy and Scott Gruhl, these records detail the journey of the athletes and their careers as they played across Canada, the United States, and beyond. An extensive collection of documents, photographs and memorabilia, the Addis collection traces their experiences in the local regional leagues, to the intermediate minor leagues of the American Hockey League and the International League, and up to the National Hockey League.
